PRISMAP Radiolanthanides Workshop: Advancing Cancer Therapy
PRISMAP is a project, supported by the European Commission, towards the building of a European network for medical radionuclides. The PRISMAP project consists of 13 work packages, where one work package specifically focuses on the development of radiolanthanides towards medical applications leaded by Paul Scherrer Institute. Radiolanthanides are receiving much focus these days due to their potential for therapeutic applications. While Lutetium-177 is seen as the “gold standard” in radionuclide/radioligand therapy, it is strongly believed in the scientific community that radiolanthanides have an important role to play in the theragnostics principle in nuclear medicine in future.
As part of the work package in question,
the PRISMAP Radiolanthanides Workshop was held at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland, from September 3 to 5, 2024. Swiss Society of Radiopharmacy / Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry (SSRCR) was one of the sponsors of this impactful three-day event. The PRISMAP Radiolanthanides Workshop brought together experts to review the latest advancements in radiolanthanides—innovative radioactive elements used in cancer therapy. The workshop highlighted cutting-edge achievements in radiolanthanide production and explored both preclinical and clinical applications. It concluded with an insightful panel on the "Clinical Translation of Terbium-161 and Lessons Learned," offering key takeaways for the future of cancer treatments.
Nuclear medicine is truly multidisciplinary, and through the PRISMAP Radiolanthanides Workshop, it was aimed to convene experts from every critical phase of the radiopharmaceutical development pipeline. It was consists of several sessions, production of radiolanthanides and targetry, cross section measurements, nuclear data, lanthanides separation, mass separation, ligand design, dosimetry, preclinical development of radiolanthanides based radiopharmaceuticals, GMP radiopharmaceutical production, regulatory perspective and clinical translation of Tb-161. Thanks to the insightful contribution of the experts, the workshop was a great success, fostering meaningful exchanges and mutual learning. One of the key highlights was the active participation of young scientists, whose contributions and interactions with experts added significant value to the workshop.
